The process followed by a solutions architect is analogous to completing a jigsaw puzzle. The first task is to collect all of the pieces by listening to the client’s goals in order to define a detailed set of requirements. Once this has been achieved the solutions architect uses their experience to define a strategy which fits the pieces together in an elegant and coherent manner.
This metaphor is one which accurately describes the way in which I work. In my mind I throw the pieces up in the air and see how they fall, allowing me to quickly test out multiple alternatives – reducing the likelihood of false starts and increasing the chances of success. Using my 25 years professional experience of software and Internet technologies, I can try different shaped pieces in different combinations to find those which most accurately meet the required objectives.
